Classic Haunted House Horror Prompt

A short haunted house writing exercise built around first-screen dread, one room, and one impossible detail.

Prompt opener

The house was empty.
The nursery light was on.
Something inside was humming my name.

Write three lines where the house appears safe, then let one domestic detail break the safety.

Why it works

  • - The setting is familiar before it becomes wrong.
  • - The threat is small enough to picture immediately.
  • - The final line creates a question without explaining the creature.

Rewrite moves

  • - Replace the house with a room the narrator knows well.
  • - Keep the first two lines under seven words each.
  • - Make the impossible detail audible, visible, or timestamped.

Test your version

Paste your three-line version into the Plotloom tester and compare its hook strength, curiosity gap, mobile readability, and shareability.
