Horror Story First Line Examples

Five compact first-line patterns for opening a horror story without exposition.

Prompt opener

The camera saw me blink.
I was not in the room.
The replay was live.

Draft a first line that names the evidence before it names the monster.

Why it works

  • - The first line creates proof instead of lore.
  • - The second line contradicts the proof.
  • - The third line makes the contradiction urgent.

Rewrite moves

  • - Start with a record: camera, voicemail, receipt, log, or timestamp.
  • - Contradict the record in line two.
  • - Delay the explanation until after the reader has a question.

Test your version
